Train to Surat Thani
The alarm was set for 12.40am! Well mine was. Sarah had misunderstood and set hers for 12.20am robbing me of 20 minutes sleep. As is the case when you know you have to get up for a flight or train it's very hard to get to sleep. I think I nodded off about 8pm having tried since 6pm. Our bags were already packed so all we needed to do was throw on some extra clothes, add bug spray, and then check-out. We have been very vigilant with the mozzie repellent as they are everywhere in this warm climate. We have all the shots for things we can get from water, monkey, or dog bites but there are lots of things you can get from mosquitoes that don't have vaccines.
We are expecting to have the whole Prachuap town to ourselves walking to the train station at 1am. How wrong we were. There has been some sort of street festival or concert by the pier and everyone is only now starting to disperse. It makes the walk much safer until we get onto the quieter street to the station and 5 dogs wandering both sides of the street start barking at us. They get within a couple of metres but no closer thanks to our discouraging shouts at them.
The train is almost right on time, 2 minutes later than scheduled, having left from Bangkok 5 hours away, that's pretty impressive. We have non air-conditioned class 2 seats again for the 5.5 hour journey. It's not hot though at this hour and even with many of the windows closed we eventually both add a long sleeve layer. The first time ever on this holiday. With the seats reclined, eye mask on, ear plugs in, we try and get some more sleep. I think I was semi successful, Sarah less so. By 5.15am I'm awake and reading my book. Managed to doze and got maybe an hour of sleep. Not too bad.
We are now sitting at the Wut Travel ticketing office and cafe in Surat Thani. Scrambled eggs and coffee for breakfast goes down well. 210 Bhat or $11. The eggs will be fresh because there's a chicken wandering around right by the tables. 😂 We have about an hour to wait for our bus and then ferry after that. Another long travel day today.
