Koh Samui - Fisherman's Village for Dinner

Where we are staying on Koh Samui is a place called Bophut Beach. It's also known as Fishermans Village. I'm guessing 40 years ago it was a quiet fishing village. It is far from that now! It's now tourist central as is the whole Island I suspect.

For dinner we follow O's advice and walk into the village to the night market which is on tonight. It's around a 1km walk. The island has one main road that circles it, a bit like Rarotonga, then the various beach towns have additional roads branching off the main road. This makes the main road crazy busy. They have made it two lanes in each direction to help cope with the volume of traffic. It seems to work. There are nice wide footpaths to walk along which is good.

The night market is in full swing and there's loud music playing and many many food stalls. There are hundreds of people too. Very busy place. We opted for pork sticks which are 50 Bhat each. They are much larger than the ones in Prachuap. We also get some nice looking vegetable spring rolls. Both are good but it's not the best meal of the trip. Total cost is 200 Bhat with a drink, about $11. Touristy prices here but still quite reasonable.

After dinner we walk through more of the night market which includes all sorts of other non-food stalls. We wander around some of the village restaurant and shopping streets too. There are far too many people for my liking. It's like we are back in Bangkok but feels worse perhaps because we came here from somewhere so laid back and relaxed. It is what it is though. The highlight for me is once we finally find the beach the moon is rising over the water. Very pretty. We walked part way back to our accommodation along the beach promenade in front of the very fancy and very expensive hotels. $640 per night for the one that looked the nicest. Woah!

The door of our cottage doesn't close very well and we are a bit worried that mossies might get in through the gap. This would normally make for a stressful evening. However, here they have mosquito netting which drops down right around the bed in a square shape. It makes the whole bed look like a tent. Very cool. We will report back if it works and if it's needed.
