Split Chillax Day

After a long travel day yesterday, we had planned to do not much today. But we were still awake around 6:30am, and by 7:30 we were ready to go hunting for some breakfast, as we had absolutely no supplies.

Today is another public holiday—Independence Day—so we were slightly worried that supermarkets might be closed. The route to the closest market takes us via the nearby beach, which is just 200 metres down a slight hill from where we are. The beach and sea look beautiful. There's a brand-new promenade that has only just opened, and there are still signs of construction going on behind the beach. We’re at Znjan Beach.
The supermarket is small but has some of the basics we need, including milk, bread, muesli, yoghurt, coffee, biscuits, apple juice, and beer. Just the essentials! 😉 It doesn’t have any meat, which is odd. We decide to grab some dried pasta and a jar of sauce, just in case we don’t find anything else for dinner.

Back to the apartment to unload and have breakfast. Then it’s time for a swim at the beach. The beach is made up of small pebbles rather than sand—a bit hard on the feet, but still nice. The water is refreshing—probably around 20 degrees—but after five minutes, it feels lovely. We float about with easy buoyancy and enjoy watching people jump off the high platform between the two beaches. After about 30 minutes, we’re ready to head back up and, once back, we jump in the pool. Yes, we have both a beach and a pool! Luxury—and yes, this is the most expensive place we’ve stayed in so far. We thought we’d treat ourselves for these four nights. It’s still cheaper than a studio motel in Cromwell!
We’re now sitting in our outdoor area, which has wicker chairs, a table, and a lovely shaded pergola right outside our apartment door. Blissful. 💕

By 12pm, the temperature hits 33 degrees, but it’s actually quite pleasant sitting out here. The pool is probably about 26 degrees—if it gets too hot, we can just jump in, which we do. We enjoy lunch outside, then head back into the air-conditioning.

At 3:30pm, I’m off on a solo mission to see if the other supermarket is open so we can get some mince for dinner. Far out, it’s hot out there! 🔥🥵 A short walk, but it’s a bust on the mince front—nothing is open. Back for a cooling swim and a coffee.
So, dinner is pretty basic: spaghetti with passata sauce, and half a baguette. The saving grace? A local beer that was nicely chilled.

    1. Haha maybe the place but not the $220 a night studio motel. 😂

  2. You remind me how expensive accommodation can be in NZ. I would be happy at 33 degrees but John wouldn't. The 28 degrees we had yesterday was great. Much cooler today as we head south again. Enjoy the sea and pool.

    1. Thanks Chris. There are different levels of "expensive". We are continuing to be surprised by what some places charge. In London we walked past Claridges Hotel in Mayfair and had to check it's rate out, $6,000 per night for a there!
