Ljubljana Walking Tour + Chores + Chill

The apartment had no hot water this morning! That was fine for me, as I’ve generally been showering after our morning activities, but Sarah was keen to have one when she got up. She decided to wait. I’ve messaged the host—hopefully, someone is coming to fix it today. Otherwise, it’ll be a very refreshing shower later on!

We were out the door by 7:30am and heading into the city centre. Keen to beat the heat expected later in the day. My tour guide Sarah conveniently failed to inform me until we were already on our way that we’d be climbing a hill to see a castle. Best to get that done early, then.
But the logical tour loop first took us to a church, the Triple Bridge, the riverside, the Butcher’s Bridge, and the Dragon Bridge—before we could even think about ascending. The dragon statues were my favourite—very cool.

Sarah later told me that there is a local legend about the bridge. If a virgin walks across the bridge the dragons will move their tails. If I had known that in advance I would have paid more attention! 😂

We also spotted the central market fruit stalls but saved visiting them for the way back. Up the hill we went. It wasn’t too bad, but we definitely got hot. There is a funicular here, but why pay €3 each when you can walk? Up close, it was hard to get a good photo of the castle, and from further away, the trees obscured the view. We did our best to get a couple of shots and walked right around it trying to find a decent view out over the city. Easier said than done.
Back at river level, we visited a lovely fountain, the town hall building, a university building, and Congress Square. They were setting up a stage, chairs, and lights for what looks like a small concert. Later research suggests it’s on the 25th, so we’ll miss that one.

We returned to the Triple Bridge to complete our loop, then headed to the market to buy some fruit for a morning tea snack. We enjoyed that sitting beside the river in the shade.
Back to the apartment via the nearby Lidl to grab supplies for lunch. Home again—and it’s only 10:30am!

Coffee and leftover cold chips for morning tea. No microwave here, which is a bit odd, but that’s OK—only one of us likes cold chips. 😉

A big slice of pizza from Lidl made for a very nice lunch. Even better, we discovered the hot water was back—yahoo! Time to do a quick wash. Except I suggested we use the eco cycle instead of the quick one… which took three hours. But with 30°C and a breeze outside, drying won’t be a problem.

The afternoon was a lazy one. I edited some video and read more of my latest book while Sarah had a nap. 😴

Later in the afternoon, we popped back to Lidl to get some flavoured pork steaks for dinner and some snacks for the train tomorrow. Gosh it was hot outside—32°C but felt even hotter on the street. We’re already discussing Plan B or C in case things get too hot in late July and August. We might need to head somewhere cooler, as the further south we go, the hotter it’s going to get. We remember those 42°C days in France ten years ago—and the world hasn’t exactly cooled down since! I'm sure Emma and Kate will remember that well.

Pork and salad for tea tonight. Very tasty.

Tomorrow is moving day again. We are reversing our trip back to Zagreb and then pushing on further into Croatia. The Schengen clock is ticking so we need to keep moving.

Edit: 5 Crowns update. 4 to 1. ☹️
