Kanchanaburi - Who Turned Out the Lights!?
We went up to the pool level to check the sunset which was not quite setting. Slightly too early. For dinner we thought we should try somewhere different so walked a bit further towards the bridge. There was a large open air, i.e. roof and no sides, place that looked promising. Turned out their meals are quite small portions but there was free entertainment.
The entertainment was the fact they were putting out dishes onto 10 reserved tables that had no one sitting at them. We assumed a tour group had not yet turned up. We ordered a Chang, Penang curry, and fried crispy pork with basil. Basil !!! Sorry that's an inner family joke. We had to write the dishes we wanted onto an order pad and then showed the waiter what we wanted from the menu and he wrote it down again in Thai. A bit odd but we saw others were also asked to do the same.
The tour group eventually turned up just before our meals did. They arrived in 2 large double decker buses like we had seen going to the falls today. The restaurant staff had to go out onto the road and hold the dozens of low hanging phone cables up with sticks so the buses could squeeze underneath. It looked like this was something they had done before. But then all the restaurant lights went out! 😂 Obviously not just phone cables! There was a lot of chatter and checking of fuses and switches. By the time the second bus had got through and parked the lights were restored and about 80 Thai people piled out of their buses ready to eat.
Total cost of our meal was 330 Bhat which seemed a bit cheap. Perhaps we ordered smaller dishes than we thought. Feeling not terribly full we decided to shout ourselves an ice cream at the 7 Eleven. Oreo trumpet for me and melon ice block for Sarah. Tomorrow is a planned rest day in our itinerary so we will see what the day brings. We booked to be here three full days knowing we needed two but thought we might waste a bit of time figuring out how to get to the places we wanted to see. The car solved that so now we have a day off from activities. It will be good to have a breather.
