Naxos - Agios Prokopios
It’s our first morning in Agios Prokopios after arriving late yesterday. We’re here for 8 nights, so there’s no need to rush things. True to form, I was as quiet as a mouse so Sarah could enjoy a sleep-in. 😉
Once Sarah was up, we had breakfast on the terrace. It was already windy, but the terrace is well protected from both the prevailing wind and the morning sun. Unfortunately, I managed to break the stove while trying to boil water for coffee, so no coffee this morning. ☹️ It wasn’t entirely my fault—one element didn’t work, and the other had a dodgy dial that snapped off when I tried to turn it to high. At least I managed to grill a piece of toast to go with my muesli.
After breakfast, we headed out to see the beach. It’s only a 5-minute walk past two inland salt ponds. The beach is very long, sandy, and the water is crystal clear. Beautiful—but windy. There are five or six clusters of beach chairs with umbrellas, but also plenty of open beach space. Very few people were out yet. It would be absolutely stunning without the wind disrupting the clear water but the benefit of the wind is it keeps the temperature more bearable.
We walked to the far end, where the beach turns into a rocky headland, and then back the other way toward the village. The village is quite small, with a few shops, restaurants, and car-hire places. It does, however, have two bakeries. At one, we bought a fresh loaf of bread for lunch, and we also stopped at the supermarket for some cheese. Then we headed back to the apartment.
When we returned, the broken stove had been removed and a replacement one was soon put in. They’re small portable ovens rather than full-sized ones. Perfect timing for making a coffee!
After coffee, we tried out the swimming pool. It was cool but refreshing, and a really good size—probably 15m by 3m, I’d guess. Not the biggest pool we’ve had, but larger than the one in Santorini. It has a few basic loungers around it, but we preferred heading back to the terrace.
It was nice to relax and chill today after yesterday’s travel. We had lunch, did some reading, and I even nodded off in the afternoon. At 5pm, we went back to the beach for our first swim here. By then, lots more people were enjoying the beach compared to the morning. A quick dip was enough to say we’d ticked that off. The water was slightly warmer than the pool but still refreshing.
For dinner, we decided on eggs on toast, since we hadn’t eaten them last night. A “proper” meal can wait until tomorrow. A couple of nights of “rice and beans” living will also help the budget recover from our big night out in Santorini. 😂 Just kidding—we simply couldn’t be bothered cooking a proper meal.
