Siem Reap - Out and About

Sarah opted for exploring first and sleeping later. That was a slight surprise. We headed out on foot and ignored the multiple approaches of the tuk tuk drivers to give us a ride. We are not going far, it's hardly worth their while. The streets are quite busy but easy enough to negotiate our way across them. It's very warm. I'm guessing in the low 30s now. Certainly feels hotter than our walk from the bus/post office. After not very long we see a street decorated with many red hanging lanterns that looks worthy of a photo. Oh we've found Siem Reaps famous "Pub Street" with its many bars and restaurants. We will be back later. At the very end of Pub Street and across another busy road we spot a 7 Eleven dairy. The main thing on our shopping list is bottled water. We need milk for coffee too and decide to grab a beer each as well. A 500ml can of German wheat beer for me plus a local lager for Sarah, 3x 1.5lt bottles of water and a long life carton of milk. We have no idea what things cost. They use USD and the Riel in Cambodia and all these are priced in Riel. We put back a 1lt bottle of milk that was 11,000 riel as thought that was about 10 USD. Turns out my memory was wrong on the exchange rate. It's divide by approximately 4,000 not 1,000 when converting to USD. The total of all our items was 29,700 Riel or USD $7 so about $13 Kiwi. The beers alone would cost that much in New Zealand so the rest was as if it was free. Sarah gave the man a 50 so we could get some change and she received back a mixture of both currencies. She also asked what time they close and was advised that they are open 24 hours. 7/24 not 7/11? Back at the hotel it was time for an afternoon nap. We set our alarms for 5pm so as to give us 2 hours of catch up sleep. Bliss.

Dinner in Pub Street at a Trip Advisor rated place. Khmer and Western menu options. We had Grandma's Chicken Fried Rice and Beef Fried Noodles plus a coke each. USD $16 so a bit pricey for here but it was a very tasty meal and a good atmosphere. It's the Chinese New Year tomorrow so the street may have had a few extra additional decorations to normal. We practiced a few selfies but more practice is required. 😂 We had a wander past and through the river night market before returning to the 7 Eleven for an ice cream. A great first afternoon in Cambodia. 8pm now and time for bed as we have an early start organised for tomorrow. 🙏
