Moving Day - Český Krumlov to Brno
This morning I went out early for one last walk around town and to track down the Adventure Lab geocache that we solved the final coordinates for yesterday. It turned out to be a great viewpoint overlooking the city that we had not been to previously. It also happened to be only 200 m away from our bus departure spot, so I carried on there to suss things out for later.
Sarah was just about up when I got back at 7:15 am. We had breakfast and then caught up with Kate and Emma on WhatsApp. They seem to be doing well without us—other than some basic habits they are trying to teach Precious (I mean Sammy). 😂
At 9:50 am it was time to check out and find somewhere shady to sit and chill for a bit. We went to a garden overlooking town that we had visited a couple of times before. We knew it had seats and shady trees, and it was on the way to the bus.
We found a seat in the shade and sat down to read for a couple of hours. Just before midday we continued our walk to the bus stop and parked ourselves in the café nearby to have lunch and wait another hour for our bus. The bus stop is very organised, with a dozen marked platforms, each with electronic boards. We are using FlixBus again today, so they also keep you updated via their app. We are advised there is a delayed departure—of just one minute! What? Why bother telling us that?
The bus pulls in and actually departs three minutes late, but who’s counting? 😉 The bus drivers we’ve had so far have all been in their 50s or 60s, but today’s looks like he just got his licence last year. 😂 At least his eyesight should be good—and his reflexes. 🤞
This is the best bus we have been on in Europe so far: modern, air-conditioning that works, USB charging, Wi-Fi, and it cruises along at 100 km/h. But at 4.5 hours, it’s still a very long time to sit in a bus seat. There are just five stops on the way to Brno, but they are brief and none include time for a leg stretch outside.
Therefore, by the time we arrive at 5:45 pm, the 550 m to the apartment is a thing to look forward to—well, for me anyway. Not sure if Sarah sees it that way. I’ve got to the point where I don’t ask; I just let her know how far the walk is and off we go. It’s 32 degrees for this walk, so the heatwaves of Europe are even impacting the northern parts. I just heard they are complaining about 35 degrees being forecast for London this week too. Ouch—that wouldn’t be good there.
We find and access our apartment, only to discover we booked one without air-conditioning—and it’s like an oven. 🥵☹️ We didn’t expect it to be this hot here. Looks like we were very wrong! It’s on the 5th floor, and other than being far too warm, it’s fine. We’ve got the windows wide open and are hoping things cool off. We’ll have to try and survive for the next four nights. It’s reminding me of the summer we spent in France in 2015—too bloody hot. 🔥
It’s time for a beer to cool off and recover from the long bus trip. Next stop is the Lidl supermarket to get milk and cereal. We also grabbed a frozen pizza for dinner. It tastes a bit like flavoured cardboard, but it fills a gap. What did we expect for $6? 🤔
